A former State Department aide has been arrested by the FBI in connection with the deadly riots at the US Capitol, according to a report.

The feds took Federico Klein, 42, into custody on Thursday in Virginia, FBI’s Washington Field Office rep Samantha Shero told Politico.

Federico Klein served as a Marine in Iraq, according to his mother, Cecilia.

Details on the charges against him were not immediately available.

Klein worked in the State Department’s Office of Brazilian and Southern Cone Affairs before being transferred to the office that handles Freedom of Information Act requests, a former colleague told the outlet on condition of anonymity.

Klein’s mother, Cecilia, said she and her son discussed the Jan. 6 events a few weeks ago and that he confirmed he had been in DC on the day of the insurrection.

Federico Klein’s arrest marks the first known instance of a Donald Trump appointee facing criminal prosecution in connection with the Capitol breach.

“As far as I know, he was on the Mall. That’s what he told me,” she told Politico in a phone interview late Thursday.

Federico Klein reportedly worked on Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign.

The retired trade official and economist told the outlet she got the impression from the conversation that her son had not entered the Capitol, but she could not recall whether he specifically denied it.

“I’m not sure he used those words,” she said, adding that her son rarely talk politics because she and her son hold different views.

“Fred’s politics burn a little hot, but I’ve never known him to violate the law. … While I believe, as he said, he was on the Mall that day, I don’t have any evidence, nor will I ever ask him, unless he tells me, where he was after he was on the Mall,” she said.

Federico Klein — one of former President Trump’s appointees to the State Department — had worked on his 2016 presidential campaign.

As of last summer, he was listed in a federal directory as a special assistant in the Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs since January 2017 and was designated as a “Schedule C” political appointee.
