Canelo Alvarez’s quest to become the undisputed world super middleweight champion continues on Saturday night.
The next step in that journey will see the 30-year-old Mexican pugilist step into the ring with Billy Joe Saunders on Saturday night at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
Alvarez (55-1-2, 37 KOs) will have his work cut out for him in the 31-year-old Saunders. The Brit (30-0, 14 KOs) is a two-division champion who has earned his shot at Alvarez.
“We will see on May 8 if he is the best opponent that I’ve faced, but it’s being assumed that he is,” Alvarez said to Univision. “Yes, he is a fighter who moves a lot, he’s left-handed, with experience. He is supposed to be one of the most difficult opponents that I’ve faced.”
Despite some consternation about the size of the ring — it’s unclear if the fighters will go at it on a 20- of 22-foot canvas — Saunders is up for the challenge. He won’t give his opponent any compliments, however.
“I’m not going to sit here and slag people off and big people up,” he told ESPN. “Canelo has been doing it for many, many years now, destroying everyone.”
