Italian ambassador to Congo Luca Attanasio killed in attack

Italy’s ambassador to the Democratic Republic of Congo was killed in an attack on a United Nations convoy while visiting the Central African nation, officials said.

The Italian ambassador, Luca Attanasio, was traveling around 10:15 a.m. Monday when the group was attacked near the town of Kanyamahoro, the Virunga National Park told Reuters.

A military policeman traveling with him was also killed in the attack.

“It is with deep sorrow that the Foreign Ministry confirms the death today in Goma of the Italian Ambassador to the Democratic Republic of Congo, Luca Attanasio, and of a policemen from the Carabinieri,” the Italian foreign ministry said in a statement.

“The ambassador and the soldier were traveling in a car in a convoy of MONUSCO, the United Nations Organisation Stabilisation Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo,” it added.

Virunga National Park initially said that two people were killed in the convoy and the ambassador was wounded. The third person was a driver, diplomatic sources said.

It was not immediately known who was behind the deadly attack.

Virunga, which lies along Congo’s borders with Rwanda and Uganda, is home to dozens of armed groups.
