If you’re combing for a George Washington memento, a lock of the Founding Father’s hair is up for auction.
The Leland’s auction house is offering multiple strands of the first president’s mane that were stored in a handmade brass and glass locket.
The delicate hair is believed to have been removed from Washington close to or after his death in 1799 at age 67, according to Leland’s.
“This well documented specimen is accompanied by a handwritten letter stating ‘General Washington’s hair — cut from his head in the year 1799 by Mr. John Pierie of Philadelphia, from whom I received it, Fr. Hopkinson, Philada: June 28th, 1836,” the auction house says in the listing.
“Artifacts associated with the nation’s first president are highly coveted by museums, history buffs, and memorabilia collectors alike,” it adds.
As of Friday morning, bidding was at $1,464 for the specimen. The auction ends at 11 p.m. on April 2.
A similar lock from the former president sold in February 2019 for $35,763.60 in another auction by Leland’s.
