Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell says he would “absolutely” support former President Donald Trump if he won the GOP’s party nomination in 2024.
McConnell went on Fox News’ “Special Report With Bret Baier” Thursday evening and hinted that some Republicans are already thinking of running for commander-in-chief.
“I’ve got at least four members that I think are planning on running for president, plus some governors and others. There’s no incumbent. Should be a wide open race,” McConnell told host Bret Baier.
Baier then asked McConnell if would support Trump if he were to win the party’s nomination for the next presidential election.
“The nominee of the party? Absolutely,” the Kentucky Republican replied.
After leaving office, Trump was impeached for a second time after House Democrats accused him of inciting the Jan. 6 Capitol Hill insurrection, but the Senate failed to convict him.
Since then, the former president said he planned to remain active in the GOP, including the 2022 midterm elections.
Utah Sen. Mitt Romney — who has been an avid Trump critic — told the New York Times recently that if Trump plans to run in 2024, he believes he will be the party’s nominee.
