Monahan says de Blasio offered him City Hall advisor role

Outgoing NYPD Chief of Department Terence Monahan said Friday morning that Mayor Bill de Blasio “called me in” this week to offer him a new gig as a senior adviser at City Hall. 

Monahan, 59, who held the NYPD’s top uniformed post since 2018, will now work with the mayor and new Big Apple “recovery czar” Lorraine Grillo as de Blasio’s senior adviser for recovery, safety, and planning.

“Listen, it’s a great opportunity for me,” Monahan said on FOX 5’s Good Day New York. “The mayor called me in earlier this week. He proposed this. It’s an opportunity to help get this city back on its feet, get business running, get the economy going again, working with our new czar, Lorraine Grillo.”

“I’m looking forward to that,” he added. “To me, it’s a great opportunity. It’s great for me, it’s great for my family. And I know I’m leaving the NYPD in fantastic hands with my good friend chief Rodney Harrison.”

Harrison, formerly the chief of detectives, will take over Monahan’s role.

The Post first reported Wednesday that Monahan would be stepping down and retiring.

The Bronx-born chief was the 36,000-member department’s 40th top cop after joining the force in 1982 and rising through the ranks.

Despite his retirement, Monahan is expected to be grilled next week by the CCRB over police tactics during the George Floyd demonstrations last summer. 

De Blasio said Thursday Monahan would still attend the interviews, even as he gets started at his new role.

But with the chief no longer on the NYPD’s payroll, Monahan would avoid any future discipline on his unresolved complaints.
