NYC releases COVID-19 vaccine data by ZIP code

New York’s coronavirus vaccination rollout has not reached all neighborhoods equally, according to data broken down by ZIP code that was released by the city on Tuesday.

The figures seem to echo racial disparities in city vaccine distribution first detailed by the city last month.

In Queens’ 11004 ZIP code, which borders Long Island and encompasses parts of Douglas-Little Neck and Bellerose, 20 percent of adults have been fully vaccinated, and another 20 percent partially vaccinated against the deadly virus.

Elsewhere in Queens, ZIP code 11697 in Breezy Point has 13 percent of its adult population fully vaccinated and an additional 27 percent partially inoculated.

But neighborhoods in between the two points are markedly less protected, the data shows.

Among ZIP codes 11412, 11433, 11434, 11436, 11420 and 11419 — which encompass parts of St. Albans, Jamaica, South Ozone Park and Richmond Hill — none has more than 3 percent of adults fully vaccinated or 4 percent of adults partially vaccinated.

The data does not include information on how many adults in each ZIP code are actually eligible for the vaccine under current state guidelines.

Other well-covered stretches of the city include Manhattan’s Upper East Side.

Five ZIP codes east of Central Park — 10065, 10021, 10075, 10028, 10128 — all have at least 12 percent of adult residents fully vaccinated and 9 percent partially vaccinated.

ZIP code 10029, however, which encompasses much of East Harlem, has only 6 percent rates in each category.

In The Bronx, ZIP code 10461 in Morris Park and Pelham Bay has 9 percent fully vaccinated and 8 percent partially covered, and ZIP code 10471 in Riverdale has percentages of 10 and 13 percent, respectively.

Among less well-off neighborhoods, including 10454 and 10455 (Mott Haven), 10474 (Hunts Point), 10472 (Soundview), 10456 (Claremont), 10453 (Morris Heights), 10457 and 10458 (Belmont), the percentages sit no higher than 3 percent fully vaccinated and 5 percent partially vaccinated.

Across four Brooklyn ZIP codes that have a collective adult population of nearly 270,000 adults — 11236, 11212, 11207 and 11208, encompassing Canarsie, Brownsville, East New York and Cypress Hills — no more than 3 percent of adults is fully vaccinated and 4 percent partially vaccinated.

Similar racial disparities were found last year in a ZIP code-based review of those neighborhoods hit hardest by the coronavirus.
