Tyson Fury gave into his “animal instinct” when he chose to lick the blood off the neck of opponent Deontay Wilder during their heavyweight title fight.
The reigning WBC champion explained his actions during the Feb. 20, 2020 bout, which Fury won by TKO in the seventh round, to ESPN on Wednesday. In the pre-fight interviews, Fury said he wanted to taste Wilder’s blood and chose to make good on it.
“I had an opportunity to do it there in Round 6,” Fury said. “So I had to taste his blood just so I could get the feeling of what my prey tasted like. I was a hunter, I was like a lion, and he was a gazelle, a large gazelle, and I took it down and then that was it, game over.”
The undefeated 32-year-old British fighter went on to say that licking another person’s blood outside of the ring isn’t something he’d likely do. Inside the ropes is a different story.
“Different mindset,” Fury said. “The animal instinct come out inside the boxing ring. And it’s either him or you. But it’s weird because I’ve not noticed anyone licking anybody else’s blood before. Hope he doesn’t have any germs or anything, or I’ve got his cooties now, baby.”
Fury is 30-0-1 with 21 of his wins coming via knockout. He has not fought since beating Wilder.
