This is the heart-stopping moment a 2-year-old Vietnamese girl plunged off a 12th-floor balcony – right into the hands of a delivery driver who is being hailed as a hero for saving the tot’s life.
Nguyen Ngoc Manh, 31, was sitting in his vehicle at 4:30 p.m. Sunday waiting to make a delivery at a Hanoi high-rise complex when he heard a child crying, VN Express International reported.
At first, he thought a baby was having a tantrum, but when he heard people screaming he rolled down his window, looked up and noticed in horror the child dangling about 160 feet above the street.
The father of two jumped into action and climbed over a 6-foot wall between him and the building, looking for where the child would possibly land.
“I scaled the wall and saw that she could fall onto the metallic roof of the house used to store electric generators for the complex, so I tried to climb on top of it,” he told the news outlet.
“I made it, but couldn’t stand firmly as the roof was crooked,” Manh added.
He lost his footing and slipped right when the girl dropped, so he flung himself forward and miraculously caught her — the impact leaving a dent on the roof.
The girl was not crying, just staring at Manh as blood oozed from her mouth.
“She looked so much like my child at home. I was so confused, only able to tell her, ‘Please, please, I’m here now,’” he told VN Express International.
Manh handed the girl over to a security guard, who rushed her to a hospital.
“I didn’t think about it much back then, but now I’m happy for doing something meaningful. After saving the girl, I left without leaving a phone number, though the girl’s family managed to contact me anyway to inform me of the girl’s health status,” said Manh, whose arm muscles were pulled in the catch.
Doctors at National Children’s Hospital said the girl dislocated her hip but suffered no other injuries.
“It’s not just changed — my life has turned upside down. Normally my Facebook posts draw only a few dozen responses, now I get tens of thousands,” Manh said.
“I don’t see myself as a hero, I just want to do good,” he said, adding that he has declined offers of gifts for his feat.
“Some have sent me money via my phone number. This disorientates me. I don’t want to receive any money I haven’t earned by myself,” Manh said.
